Detect Early. Protect Always.
ChesGuard LLC is a natural gas safety company based in Newark, New Jersey. We do one thing. We make a natural gas alarm that is accurate, that is certified against the right standard, and that an ordinary person can put on a wall in a few minutes without calling anyone.
Why One Product
Natural gas is the fuel in the majority of American kitchens and boiler rooms, and it is the one household hazard with no warning of its own once the odorant fades or a leak starts somewhere nobody walks past. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are in almost every home and they are excellent at what they do, but neither of them detects methane. That gap is what ChesGuard exists to close, and closing it properly is a full time job. Building a single device well, to a published safety standard, is more useful than building five devices adequately.
How We Build It
The ChesGuard CG-GD1 detects methane at 10 percent of the lower explosive limit, which means it sounds long before the air in a room becomes capable of igniting. It runs on a built-in lithium battery designed to last approximately 10 years from activation, so there is no annual battery change to forget and no wiring to install. It mounts on a wall with the supplied mounting hardware. It has been tested by Intertek and is ETL Listed, conforming to UL Standard 1484, the fuel gas alarm standard, under control number 5017086. The certificate is published in full because a safety claim that cannot be checked is not worth making.
Who We Build It For
Two people, and the product has to work for both. The first is a homeowner who wants one alarm on the wall by the boiler tonight and does not want to book a tradesman to get it there. The second is a managing agent responsible for thousands of dwelling units facing New York City's January 1, 2027 deadline under Local Law 157, who needs the same device to be certifiable, documentable and installable by their own maintenance team. A battery powered alarm serves both in qualifying existing buildings, which is why we built one.
What We Will Not Say
We do not claim that any alarm is approved, endorsed or certified by the City of New York, because no manufacturer's product is. We do not describe the CG-GD1 as UL Listed, because it is ETL Listed and conforms to the UL standard, and those are different things. We publish the limitations of the device on the spec sheet alongside the specification, including the fact that it detects natural gas only and will not detect carbon monoxide, smoke or propane. A gas alarm is a safety device. Overstating one is worse than not selling one.
