What ETL Listed Means
ETL is the certification mark issued by Intertek, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. An ETL Listed mark means the product has been tested by Intertek and found to conform to an applicable published safety standard. In this case the standard is UL 1484, the fuel gas alarm standard, sixth edition, dated February 28, 2025. UL writes the standard. Intertek tested against it and issued the listing. UL and ETL are both recognized certification marks when issued by accredited Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories within their respective scopes.
We describe the CG-GD1 as ETL Listed, conforming to UL Standard 1484. We never describe it as UL Listed, because that phrase means a listing issued by UL, which is a different body. The distinction matters on a compliance filing and we would rather be precise than convenient.
How This Relates To New York City
New York City rule 1 RCNY 908-02 requires a natural gas detecting device to be listed and labeled to UL 1484, or to UL 2075 where that standard applies, and manufactured in accordance with NFPA 715-2023. The certificate above is the evidence of the UL 1484 listing. Keep a copy with your building records, because owners are required to hold proof of compliance and produce it on request to HPD, DOB, FDNY and DOHMH.
The New York City Department of Buildings does not approve, endorse or certify any manufacturer's product. No alarm sold anywhere is NYC approved, DOB approved or LL157 certified. Those descriptions have no basis. What the rule asks for is the listing standard, so that is what we state and evidence. The Local Law 157 guide sets out the requirement in full.
Verifying The Certificate
Certification records issued by Intertek can be checked against the control number, 5017086, through Intertek's own directory. We would encourage any procurement team to do exactly that rather than rely on a PDF hosted by the manufacturer. If you need the certificate supplied directly for a tender or a board submission, email support@chesguard.com.
